Atari 2600 homebrews

The next release of Pantheon will be all about Atari 2600 games. Again? Yes, but this time I will try to bring you the best from Atari 2600 homebrew scene. Pantheon already has several home-made games (Elevators Amiss, Hunchy 2...) in his library, but there are a lot more available. During this new years holiday I added almost 30 homebrew games to Atari 2600 game library, and I can only say: not bad. Not bad at all!

Sega Genesis/Mega Drive emulator in development

Genesis/Mega Drive was one of the most popular video game console of all time, with a lot of great games, like Sonic the Hedgehog, Shining Force and Phantasy Star. Genesis/Mega Driveis is 16-bit console that also provides backwards compatibility with the Master System. The system produces sound by way of a Yamaha YM2612 FM synthesizer, has 64KB of RAM and can display up to 64 colors at once from a palette of 512.

I have been developing Genesis/Mega Drive emulator for quite some time and even that it's still far from perfect, it is capable to run a few games. There is still a lot of work to do and things to improve, but I hope that several Genesis/Mega Drive games will be available in Pantheon, next year.

Back to the roots

Emulator of Atari 2600 video gaming console was the first emulator that I've made and it has been almost four years since the first Pantheon, which included 48 Atari 2600 games, was released. Pantheon now has more than 400 Atari 2600 games in its library, and I plan to add more games for the next release.

Atari 2600 was very popular for years and has hundreds of games available. Despite the fact, that its hardware capabilities were quite poor (128 bytes of RAM), programmers soon learned how to push its hardware's capabilities and made some incredible and unique games. Activision released Dolphin in 1983, and the game was not very successful. It is fast-paced action game, where you control a dolphin, haunted by a giant squid. There are barriers in the sea and if you hit a barrier, you will slow down for a moment. There is a gap in each barrier, and you must swim through it, but the game is fast and you will not have a time to react, once the barrier comes on screen. So you must focus on the tone, that is played a few seconds before the barrier comes on screen: the higher the frequency of the tone, the higher the gap in the barrier will be.

MSX2 emulator is in development

The second generation of MSX computers was released two years after the first generation. MSX2 computers are backward compatible with MSX computers, the mayor difference is in graphics. MSX2 computers have Yamaha V9938 video display processor with 128KB of video RAM. V9938 can display more sprites (32 16-color sprites), more colors and more pixels (512 × 212 with 16 colours, 256 × 212 with 256 colours), and games for MSX2 computers are on another level compared to MSX. Emulator of MSX2 computers is far from finished, but hopefully, several MSX2 games will be available in Pantheon at the beginning of the next year.
